On modeling the rhythm of natural languages

چکیده
We describe a new model for the formal representation of the rhythmic tendencies of natural languages. The algorithm is a modification of PVI, proposed by Grabe and Low [10]. The model was tested on a fairly substantial corpus of Italian semispontaneous productions, and its outcome compared with that yielded by two well-known algorithms (Ramus [14] and PVI).

Uprising in “Uprising”: A Multimodal Analysis of Bob Marley’s Lyrics
This paper investigates how the theme of uprising is conveyed in Bob Marley’s final music album by the name “Uprising”. Through the methodological lenses of multimodality, attention is focused on how the album cover design, lexical items, literary devices, and other aesthetic ways such as the titles of the ten songs of the album and their order of arrangement contribute to the overall theme of ...
متن کاملRhythm analysis of texts using Natural Language Processing
The paper is introducing a research aiming to analyze rhythm in various genres of texts. After a review of the literature on rhythm formalization in texts, a Natural Language Processing application was developed for analyzing the rhythmicity in three cases: poem, prose, and political speech. The application implemented three formal approaches for rhythm analysis, proposed for the Romanian and F...
متن کاملThe Continuum of Speech Rhythm: Computational Testing of Speech Rhythm of Large Corpora from Natural Chinese and English Speech
Past research on the dichotomy of language rhythm classes (stressvs. syllable-timing) has typically been performed on constructed speech data, e.g. "The North Wind and the Sun" text. Our research goes beyond the previously established speech rhythm studies by combining: (1) a data set of 175 minutes of audio from large corpora of natural English and Chinese speech and (2) natural language proce...
متن کاملModeling the Speech Rhythm of Beijing Chinese in the CCI Framework
This study describes the application of CCI (Control/Compensation Index) [3, 4] to a corpus of spontaneous Beijing Chinese. CCI is a modification of the PVI algorithm [8], devised to provide an improved representation of the rhythmic tendencies of natural languages. The CCI algorithm was previously applied to the modeling of Italian [3, 5]. The present findings refer to Beijing Chinese.
متن کاملAutomatic rhythm modeling for language identification
This paper deals with an approach to Automatic Language Identification based on rhythmic modeling. Beside phonetics and phonotactics, rhythm is actually one of the most promising features to be considered for language identification, but significant problems are unresolved for its modeling. In this paper, an algorithm of rhythm extraction is described. Experiments are performed on read speech f...
